Waste Disposal Questions

Haywire Landfill – only takes paper sludge: 906-286-0179

Background

Haywire Landfill, located on M-94 north of Manistique, has operated since 2003, as a Type III low-hazard industrial waste landfill. The landfill is currently 28 acres and receives paper mill residual material (also called paper pulp). Due to historical groundwater contamination at this site, including boron, total inorganic nitrogen, and arsenic, and the fact that paper mill residuals often contain PFAS chemicals, EGLE requested that the Haywire Landfill sample groundwater for PFAS, which was done in June 2021.

Groundwater flows to the east – northeast towards the Manistique River.

Drinking water

There are no residential wells located downgradient or side gradient of the landfill.

Anticipated activities

EGLE will request the Landfill to collect samples from wells located on the border of the landfill, to help delineate the plume of contamination and to determine if any PFAS contamination has left the site.

Historical timeline

    • On June 9, 2021, the Haywire Landfill consultant, Bittner Engineering, Inc., collected groundwater samples from four monitoring wells.
    • On August 19, 2022, EGLE received the results of the June 9, 2021, sampling event. Upgradient monitoring well MW-15 was non-detect for PFAS. Samples from the other three monitoring wells had results that were above the Groundwater Cleanup Criteria, the highest of which was 64 ppt PFOA and 95 ppt PFOS.
