Waste Disposal Questions
Please note that this landfill is CLOSED and does not accept waste.
Background
The City of Manistique Landfill located on M-94, was a local landfill that operated from 1974 to 1992. During part of the time the landfill was in operation, there were no environmental regulations prohibiting the disposal of waste from businesses and municipalities that may have contained PFAS from sources such as drycleaners, automotive repair, and fire departments. Consequently, there may have been PFAS containing wastes disposed in the landfill. Groundwater is monitored bi-annually under an approved Hydrogeological Monitoring Plan, in accordance with the January 1997 Consent Decree, and has shown the presence of manganese, iron, ammonia, diethyl ether, and cyanide. There are drinking water wells located downgradient about one mile from the landfill. For these reasons, EGLE requested sampling for PFAS at specific monitoring wells where other contamination had occurred.
The landfill closed in 1992 and was capped to prevent infiltration of rainwater. It is underlain by at least 60 feet of sand. Groundwater flows from the landfill through the sand to the west-southwest towards a wetland and the Sturgeon Hole Creek. There are four drinking water wells located within one mile to the south of the landfill along M-94. Because no PFAS was found at the downgradient monitoring wells, data suggest that there has been no impact to the adjacent wetland, Sturgeon Hole Creek, or drinking water wells.

Drinking water
No drinking water wells have been tested for PFAS, as samples from downgradient monitoring wells showed that PFAS contamination has not left the site.
Anticipated activities
Continued groundwater monitoring of the landfill as outlined in the Hydrogeological Monitoring Plan and Remedial Action Plan.
Historical timeline
-
2019
- On July 30, 2019, the city of Manistique’s contractor, Coleman Engineering collected groundwater samples from the following monitoring wells: MW-4, MW-7, and MW-9. There were no PFAS found in monitoring wells MW-4 or MW-9; however, groundwater at MW-7 was found to contain PFOA at 14 ppt, which exceeds Part 201 Criteria.
- On October 24, 2019, Coleman Engineering collected samples from two additional wells downgradient (MLS-7B and MLS-7C) to ensure that PFAS was not moving off site. These samples were non-detect from PFAS.
