Background
The Roto-Finish Co., Inc. is an EPA Superfund site located at 3700 East Milham. Historic operations included manufacturing specialized equipment to deburr and polish metal castings, mechanical parts, and similar objects that required a smooth finish. Review of past operations and product use prompted EGLE to request the potentially responsible party to sample for PFAS at the site. The potentially responsible party declined the request. EGLE sampled six groundwater monitoring wells for PFAS and detected concentrations above the drinking water standard. The highest concentration groundwater sample contained 16 ppt PFOA (compared to 8 ppt). Historically, the groundwater flow direction at the site was toward the southwest, then west. There was shift in groundwater flow direction over time due to the changing impact of a (Pfizer) water production well south of the site, and it is now going north, northwest.

Drinking water information
There are three businesses located west of the site that historically were sampled for volatile organic compounds as a precautionary measure to evaluate potential exposure to site-related contaminants. Only one well had detections. Those three businesses were connected to municipal water in 2024. EGLE, DHHS and the local health department evaluated nearby water wells and determined that no wells need to be sampled.
Anticipated activities
EPA has asked the potentially responsible party to sample for PFAS at the site in the future.
