Background

Collier Road Landfill located at 575 Collier Road is a closed Municipal Solid Waste Landfill. Historically, leachate releases have caused groundwater contamination at the site. Due to these releases and proximity to drinking water, wells, and surface water bodies, the site was sampled for PFAS.

The upper aquifer flows northeast; the lower aquifer flows southeast. Off-site groundwater contamination is delineated and documented for other contaminants.

Drinking water

One residential well has been tested for PFAS and selected inorganics in the area. DHHS will follow-up with the resident with any health-based recommendations. Most of the homes in the area are connected to municipal water supplied by Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA).This water has been tested under EGLEs Statewide PFAS Survey between 2018 and 2020 and is currently being monitored for PFAS under the Safe Drinking Water Act. During the Statewide Survey PFAS levels in finished drinking water were non-detect for PFAS.

Anticipated activities

The city of Pontiac is conducting quarterly PFAS sampling in 2021 and 2022 to delineate the extent of PFAS contamination to determine if further response is necessary.

Historical timeline

    • On December 19, 2019, the city of Pontiac's contractor (Test America) collected PFAS samples according to the EGLE-approved Work Plan dated November 20, 2019. Seven groundwater monitoring wells were sampled as part of this sampling effort.
    • On May 12, 2020, EGLE received the raw data from the groundwater sampling event.  EGLE received the final report on October 12, 2020.  The highest groundwater results were 8.5 ppt PFOS, 9.3 ppt PFOA, non-detect PFNA, 3.9 ppt PFHxS, 31 ppt PFHxA, 5.1 ppt PFBS, and non-detect HFPO-DA.
    • On November 30, 2020, city of Pontiac submitted a workplan to delineate PFAS in groundwater.  EGLE responded with comments and received the finalized workplan on January 4, 2021.
    • On February 2-4, 2021, the city of Pontiac’s contractor, ESS, collected 15 groundwater samples for PFAS.
    • On April 30, 2021, EGLE received the data from the first quarterly sampling event. The highest groundwater results were 240 ppt PFOS, 85 ppt, PFOA, 7.4 ppt PFNA, 54 ppt PFHxS, 63 ppt PFHxA, 44 ppt PFBS, and non-detect HFPO-DA.
    • In June 2021, EGLE put door hangers on three residents’ doors in a follow-up attempt to secure permission to sample their wells; EGLE has yet to receive permission granting access to sample.
    • On June 16-17, 2021, the city of Pontiac’s contractor, Environmental Sampling Services (ESS), collected 14 groundwater samples for PFAS. The highest groundwater results were 190 ppt PFOS, 90 ppt PFOA, 6.2 ppt PFNA, 56 ppt PFHxS, 86 ppt PFHxA, 61 ppt PFBS, and non-detect HFPO-DA.
    • On September 9, 2021, the city of Pontiac’s contractor, Environmental Sampling Services (ESS), collected 14 groundwater samples for PFAS. The highest groundwater results were 270 ppt PFOS, 120 ppt PFOA, 8 ppt PFNA, 75 ppt PFHxS, 89 ppt PFHxA, 67 ppt PFBS, and non-detect HFPO-DA.
    • On December 20, 2021, the city of Pontiac’s contractor, Environmental Sampling Services (ESS), collected 14 groundwater samples for PFAS. The highest groundwater results were 230 ppt PFOS, 92 ppt PFOA, 8.2 ppt PFNA, 53 ppt PFHxS, 86 ppt PFHxA, 110 ppt PFBS, and non-detect HFPO-DA.
    • On January 5, 2022, EGLE’s contractor sampled one residential well which was non-detect for PFAS.
    • On February 15-16, 2022, the city of Pontiac’s contractor, Environmental Sampling Services (ESS), collected 14 groundwater samples for PFAS. The highest groundwater results were 170 ppt PFOS, 81 ppt PFOA, 6.5 ppt PFNA, 43 ppt PFHxS, 89 ppt PFHxA, 160 ppt PFBS, and non-detect HFPO-DA.
