Grayling Municipal Wells

Updated: February 12, 2019

The municipal wells of the city of Grayling is a water supply that had detections of PFAS below the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA)’s Lifetime Health Advisory (LHA) level of 70 parts per trillion (ppt) for PFOS+PFOA.

Four public meetings have been held to date in the Grayling area. There are two official PFAS sites in Grayling: the Grayling Army Airfield and Camp Grayling – Lake Margrethe.

  • On May 25, 2017, the Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (MDMVA) sampled the two municipal wells serving the city of Grayling for PFAS. In Well #1, PFAS compounds were detected at 31.3 ppt Total Tested PFAS. In Well #2, PFAS compounds were detected at low levels (near the reporting limits) and much below the USEPA’s LHA.
  • On September 7, 2017, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) collected additional samples from the Grayling municipal wells. These samples confirmed the initial result for Well #1 at 1.41 ppt PFOS+PFOA, and Well #2 was ND for Total Tested PFAS. The city of Grayling plans to continue monitoring the wells quarterly to demonstrate the levels are reliably and consistently below the USEPA LHA.
  • On April 2, 2018, EGLE resampled the municipal wells as part of the city effort to continue to monitor for PFAS to demonstrate the levels are reliably and consistently below health advisories. The results for Well #1 were 15.65 ppt Total Tested PFAS; Well #2 was ND for Total Tested PFAS.
  • On November 6, 2018, the city of Grayling’s municipal supply was tested as part of EGLE's statewide initiative to test all public water supplies and schools with their own wells. Two samples were collected, one from each sample tap.
  • On February 4, 2019, EGLE informed the city of Grayling of the results. One sample was ND for Total Tested PFAS, and the other was ND for PFOS+PFOA with 3 ppt Total Tested PFAS. Results from this testing are available on EGLE's public water supply statewide sampling survey page.
