Innovative Housing Programs Producing Impactful Results for Michigan
MSHDA Board supports affordable housing in Kent and Oakland Counties
LANSING, Mich. – Today, the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) Board approved funding for two affordable housing developments in Kent and Oakland counties, preserving and creating 77 affordable housing units.
The board approved funding for the rehabilitation of Genesis East, a 23-unit permanent supportive housing development, with 10 accessible units, in the city of Kentwood. The rehabilitation of the development will include extensive exterior and interior updates.
Auburn Place, a new construction development in the city of Pontiac was also approved for funding by the MSHDA board. All 54 units, including 11 accessible units, will be permanent supportive housing with Project-Based Vouchers.
The board approved the issuance and sale of the Single-Family Mortgage Revenue Bonds, 2025 Series A & B and the General Operating Bonds, 2025 Series 1 to fund single-family mortgages and down payment assistance. MSHDA intends to issue approximately $475 million of these bonds to help around 3,000 families purchase their first homes.
MSHDA CEO and Executive Director Amy Hovey highlighted the progress and productivity of the agency’s new innovative programs, indicating the tremendous demand in Michigan’s housing market right now.
“We’re continuing to work hard to implement programs that provide real results in expanding housing opportunities for all Michiganders,” said Amy Hovey, CEO and Executive Director of MSHDA. “The early success of these programs is a testament to the impact of creative housing solutions and the value of partnership.”
First-Generation Down Payment Assistance was launched last month to increase access to homeownership for first-generation homebuyers throughout Michigan. Since its launch, $3 million in down payment assistance loans has been reserved.
Five months after the launch of the MSHDA Rate Relief Mortgage, $34.4 million in funds has been reserved, committed, and purchased mortgages. This program is supported by FHLBank Indianapolis, who purchased a $50 million MSHDA bond that provides Bank members the opportunity to sell single-family mortgage loans to MSHDA at below-market rates.
Since its launch two weeks ago, the Employer-Assisted Housing Fund has received five applications totaling $6.49 million in requested funds including land and cash employer matches.
As a result of this month’s board action, MI Neighborhood has reserved $52.5 million in grants statewide to support 1,422 units of housing.
