Michigan Department of Civil Rights to Host Virtual Training: Know Your Rights and Responsibilities Under Fair Housing Law

LANSING, MI—The Michigan Department of Civil Rights will host a free virtual presentation, Know Your Rights and Responsibilities Under Fair Housing Law, on Monday, March 31, 2025. The session is designed for homebuyers, real estate agents, appraisers, lenders, and anyone who works in or has an interest in the homebuying process. The training will feature fair housing law experts who will share information on how to avoid, spot, and respond to bias or discrimination in homebuying transactions.

The virtual training is open to the public and will be held via ZOOM from 2 pm – 4 pm on March 31. The event is free, but you must register in advance. ASL interpreters and CART services will be provided. If you require an accommodation to take part, contact Patty Barrera at barrerap@michigan.gov at least 5 days prior to the virtual session.

Beginning with the first of four public hearings held in November of 2023 and culminating in the 2024 Civil Rights Summit on Fair Housing in June of 2024, MDCR led a months-long examination into the problem of housing discrimination and identified public policies to address it. MDCR has published a report, No Place Like MI Home, outlining their findings and the policy recommendations from their review of current obstacles to fair housing in Michigan.

“In the 2024 Fair Housing public hearings and Civil Rights Summit, we heard repeatedly from both industry experts and Michigan residents about the need for training and education on fair housing,” said MDCR Executive Director John E. Johnson, Jr. “This event is a first step in fulfilling our promise to help fill the gap with education and training on fair housing and the laws that protect against discrimination in the homebuying process.”

The Michigan Department of Civil Rights is charged with investigating and resolving discrimination complaints and works to prevent discrimination through educational programs that promote voluntary compliance with civil rights laws. The Department also provides information and services to businesses and community organizations on antibias initiatives and equal employment law. For more information on the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, go to michigan.gov/MDCR.
