Michigan Saw Online Job Advertisement Decreases in February 2025

Michigan saw just under 170,000 online job advertisements posted in February 2025. This was a decrease of about 1,900 ads (-1.1 percent) from the previous month and by 12,800 (-7.0 percent) compared to one year prior. Roughly 67,300 (39.6 percent) of the February advertisements were newly posted, meaning they did not carry over from previous months. This was a slight decrease from the 70,400 newly posted ads seen in January 2025.

Nearly 94,700 of the jobs posted in February required a minimum education level, which is the lowest level needed to apply for the position. This requirement lists the lowest level of education needed to apply for the position. Of the jobs listing a minimum education level, 49.5 percent requested a high school diploma or GED.

In February, the top industries with the most job ads were General medical and surgical hospitals; Limited-service restaurants; and Colleges, universities, and professional schools. Together, these industries accounted for 10.0 percent of the total monthly ads in Michigan. A large portion (21.0 percent) of the monthly ads were posted within the following cities: Detroit (13,700 ads), Grand Rapids (11,900 ads), and Lansing (10,100 ads).

Location Spotlight: Traverse City MSA

In February 2025, just over 1,500 online job advertisements were posted in the Traverse City Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). This was a 5 percent decrease over the month and a 24.3 percent increase over the year. The three companies with the most postings were Munson Healthcare, Grand Traverse Resort and Spa, and Great Wolf Resorts. On its own, Munson Healthcare made up 22.3 percent of the total monthly ads, and the three companies together accounted for 27.8 percent.

Following typical statewide postings for specific occupations, the Traverse City MSA’s top three advertised occupations were Registered nurses, Retail salespersons, and First-line supervisors of retail sales workers. These occupations accounted for 7.9, 5.5, and 4.7 percent of the MSA’s total online ads for the month, respectively. Though these occupations held a similar rank in the Traverse City MSA as they did in Michigan as a whole, they each made up a larger share of the total online ads in the MSA than they did statewide.

While the MSA’s occupation ads aligned well with statewide ads, its industry advertisements did not. The top advertising industry in the Traverse City MSA was Offices of physicians (except mental health specialists) with 350 ads. This was more ads than the next 10 industries combined. This industry was also in the top four statewide for February. In the MSA, Hotels (except casino hotels) and motels and Convention and trade show organizers were both included in the top five advertising industries. A large distinction between the industry ads in the Traverse City MSA compared to statewide is that Hotels (except casino hotels) and motels ranked 12th statewide, and Convention and trade show organizers was not listed within the top 50 for the state.

Offices of physicians (except mental health specialists) made up a large portion of the February online job ads by industry in the Traverse City MSA.
