Median Household Income in the Detroit Employment Solutions Corporation Area Measures $38,100 in 2023

According to the 2023 American Community Survey 1-Year Estimates, the median household income in Michigan measured just below $69,200. This was about $8,500 less than the national household income of $77,700. 

Michigan’s median household income ranked 38th nationally, one spot lower than bordering state Indiana, and three spots higher than Ohio. Wisconsin ranked 26th with a median household income $5,400 greater than Michigan’s.

The Detroit Employment Solutions Corporation area, encompassing the City of Detroit, had a median household income of $38,100 in 2023. This was about $31,100 less than the statewide median household income. 

The median household income in the city inched up 0.3 percent compared to 2022, however, has decreased by $2,600 (6.4 percent) since 2021 whenthe median household income adjusted for inflation measured $40,700.

Since 2013, Michigan’s median household income has increased by $5,800 (9.1 percent). Detroit’s median household income adjusted for inflation measured $32,600 in 2013 and has increased 16.8 percent ($5,500) over the period.

The median household income in Detroit has increased 16.8 percent since 2013.
