Kautawaubet County was the name given to Wexford County in 1840. By 1843, the name was changed to Wexford County. B. W. Hall is considered the first settler of the area.
Wexford County has sixteen townships. They are Antioch, Boon, Cedar Creek, Cherry Grove, Clam Lake, Colfax, Greenwood, Hanover, Haring, Henderson, Liberty, Selma, Slagle, South Branch, Springville, and Wexford. Some of the communities are Cadillac, Manton, Mesick, Buckley, Harrietta, Hoxeyville, and Yuma.
