Wayne
Wayne county was established in 1796 by the acting territorial governor, Winthrop Sargent, under the Northwest Ordinance and is the home of the city of Detroit - so named after the French word for a strait between two lakes. Due to its strategic location, it was first home to ancient mound builders and had continuous settlements prior to the establishment of the French village of Detroit by Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac in 1701. During the early years of Euro-American habitation, it was home to indigenous bands, French traders, English colonials, early Americans and people of African descent. By treaty it was transferred to the United States after the Revolution but was formally turned over to General Anthony Wayne in 1796 when America took possession of what is now Wayne County and the most of what is known as Michigan today.
