The original name of Otsego County was Okkuddo; a name that meant sickly. So, in 1843, Otsego County was chosen over that, as there was already one in New York, and Otsego meant clear water. The county took a while to attract settlers, but finally did with the lure of pine trees for lumber. After a failed attempt to harvest lumber in 1868, Charles Brink established a lumber company and soon the village of Otsego Lake was formed. There are nine townships in Otsego County. They are Bagley, Charlton, Chester, Corwith, Dover, Elmira, Hayes, Livingston, and Otsego Lake. Some of the communities in Otsego County are Gaylord, Vanderbilt, Elmira, Johannesburg, and Waters.
