Monroe County was created from part of Wayne County, 14 July 1817 (Terr. Papers U.S. 10: 729). It contained part of the disputed strip of land claimed by Ohio. Over the next 20 years, it both lost and gained territory to Lenawee and Washtenaw counties. The border land dispute was settled in 1836, which resulted in a final loss of terrain to Ohio (5 Stat. 49 and 5 Stat. 144). The County was named for President James Monroe (1758-1831), fifth President of the United States.
