Ingham County was established in October 1829 from territory once part of Shiawassee and Washtenaw Counties. In 1838, its administration was detached from Washtenaw County and established its own county government. It was named for Samuel D. Ingham, the Secretary of Treasury under President Andrew Jackson.
Mason is the county seat. Contiguous counties are Clinton, Eaton, Jackson, Livingston and Shiawassee. The state capital is in Lansing.
