Crawford
Crawford County was originally called Shawono when established in 1840. By 1843, the county was renamed to Crawford after Col. William Crawford, a Revolutionary War figure. For a moment, the unorganized county found parts of itself attached to other counties such as Kalkaska County. Crawford County consists of six townships. They are Beaver Creek, Frederic, Grayling, Lovells, Maple Forest, and South Branch. Grayling, Frederic, Waters, and the ghost town Pere Cheney are some of the communities in Crawford County.
