Governor Granholm Makes Appointments

LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the following appointments to the Commission on Services to the Aging, Residential Builders’ and Maintenance and Alteration Contractors’ Board, and the Self-Insurers’ Security Fund, Second Injury Fund, Silicosis, Dust Disease, and Logging Industry Compensation Fund Board of Trustee:

Commission on Services to the Aging

Donald L. Newport of Greenbush, president emeritus and consultant at Alpena Community College.  Mr. Newport is appointed to represent Independents for a term expiring July 28, 2009.  He succeeds Alberta Wilburn whose term has expired.

Anthony P. Pawelski of Pinconning, chair of the Bay County Democratic Party.  Mr. Pawelski is appointed to represent Democrats for a term expiring July 28, 2009.  He succeeds Herman Dooha whose term has expired.

Jerutha Kennedy of Detroit, unit director for the Neighborhood Service Organization/Harper Gratiot Multi Service Center.  Ms. Kennedy is reappointed to represent Independents for a term expiring July 28, 2009.

Ramesh C. Verma of Novi, former director of health care engineering with Ayres, Lewis, Norris & May Inc.  Mr. Verma is reappointed to represent Democrats for a term expiring July 28, 2009.

The Commission on Services to the Aging advises the Office of Services to the Aging, the governor, and the Legislature on matters related to policies and programs for older and aging persons in Michigan.  The bipartisan commission also promotes senior citizen interests within state government and communities and administers programs of the federal Older Americans Act and state-funded programs.

Residential Builders’ and Maintenance and Alteration Contractors’ Board

Frank DiStefano of Grosse Pointe Woods, vice president of Allstate Construction Company.  Mr. DiStefano is appointed to represent licensed residential builders for a term expiring March 31, 2009.  He succeeds L. David Kellett whose term has expired.

James G. Haeussler of Saline, president of Peters Building Co.  Mr. Haeussler is appointed to represent licensed residential builders for a term expiring March 31, 2010.  He succeeds Robert R. Jones whose term has expired.

The Residential Builders’ and Maintenance and Alteration Contractors’ Board provides for the licensing of persons who engage in business as residential builders and residential maintenance and alteration contractors and salespersons.  The board sets standards of qualification and eligibility for licensure, authorizes the collection and expenditure of fees, and provides penalties for the violation of the Occupational Code.

Self-Insurers’ Security Board, Second Injury Fund, Silicosis, Dust Disease, and Logging Industry Compensation Fund Board of Trustees

James P. Dillon of Lansing, vice president of claims regional operations with Accident Fund Insurance Company of America.  Mr. Dillon is appointed to represent the insurance industry for a term expiring April 30, 2010.  He succeeds Mark Hogle whose term has expired.

The Self-Insurers’ Security Board, Second Injury Fund, Silicosis, Dust Disease, and Logging Industry Compensation Fund Board of Trustees oversees the Funds Administration.  The Funds Administration is funded by insurers who write workers’ compensation policies in the state and employers who self-insure their workers’ compensation liability.  The board’s assessments cover all benefits paid by the Funds Administration and all administrative and litigation costs.  Each of the three funds makes a separate assessment.

These appointments are subject to Section 6 of Article V of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963.  It stands confirmed unless disapproved by the Michigan Senate within 60 days.
