Governor Granholm Makes Appointments

LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm recently announced the following appointments to the Executive Committee and Corporation Board of the Michigan Early Childhood Investment Corporation (ECIC), and the State Construction Code Commission:
Early Childhood Investment Corporation
Ismael Ahmed of Dearborn, executive director of the Arab Community Center for Economic & Social Services (ACCESS). Mr. Ahmed is appointed to the ECIC Executive Committee for a term expiring July 22, 2009.
Susan K. Broman of Grand Rapids, executive director of Steelcase Foundation. Ms. Broman is appointed to the ECIC Executive Committee for a term expiring July 22, 2007.
Deborah I. Dingell of Dearborn, vice chair of the General Motors Foundation and executive director of Community and Government Relations, Public Policy Center. Ms. Dingell is appointed to the ECIC Executive Committee for a term expiring July 22, 2009.
Stephen E. Ewing of Franklin, president and COO of DTE Energy Gas. Mr. Ewing is appointed to the ECIC Executive Committee for a term expiring July 22, 2008.
Pamela M. Faris of Clio, wife of Lt. Governor John D. Cherry, Jr. Ms. Faris is appointed to the ECIC Executive Committee for a term expiring July 22, 2008.
Michael P. Flanagan of Delta Township, state superintendent of public instruction. Mr. Flanagan is appointed to the ECIC Executive Committee for a term expiring July 22, 2009.
David C. Hollister of Lansing, director of the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth. Mr. Hollister is appointed to the ECIC Executive Committee for a term expiring July 22, 2009.
Robert P. Kelch, M.D. of Ann Arbor, executive vice president for medical affairs at the University of Michigan. Dr. Kelch is appointed to the ECIC Executive Committee for a term expiring July 22, 2007.
Marvin H. McKinney, Ph.D. of Haslett, program director for the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Dr. McKinney is appointed to the ECIC Executive Committee for a term expiring July 22, 2007.
Hubert Price, Jr. of Pontiac, president of Synergistics Consulting. Mr. Price is appointed to the ECIC Executive Committee for a term expiring July 22, 2008.
Gina Poma of Warren. Ms. Poma is appointed to the ECIC Executive Committee for a term expiring July 22, 2006.
Lawrence J. Schweinhart, Ph.D. of Ann Arbor, president of High-Scope Educational Research Foundation. Dr. Schweinhart is appointed to the ECIC Executive Committee for a term expiring July 22, 2008.
Loise Jean Stewart of Jackson, chairperson of the Head Start Policy Council. Ms. Stewart is appointed to the ECIC Executive Committee for a term expiring July 22, 2006.
Sally A. Vaughn, Ph.D. of Northville, superintendent of the Livingston Education Service Agency. Dr. Vaughn is appointed to the ECIC Executive Committee for a term expiring July 22, 2006.
All of the appointees are also appointed to the ECIC Corporation Board for a term expiring at the pleasure of the Governor.
The Michigan Early Childhood Investment Corporation is non-profit public corporation to coordinate state and local efforts to promote early childhood development activities in Michigan. It is charged with establishing guidelines for early childhood development activities to be implemented throughout the state in partnership with local intermediate school districts. The effort is funded by public and private funds and was first announced in the Governor’s State of the State in February.
These appointments are not subject to disapproval.
State Construction Code Commission
Robert A. DeBerardino of Dearborn, building official and deputy director for the Dearborn Building and Safety Department. Mr. DeBerardino is appointed to represent municipal building inspectors for a term expiring January 31, 2007. He succeeds Kevin Varner whose term has expired.
Kenneth G. Lawless of Portland, vice president of Clark Construction Company. Mr. Lawless is appointed to represent industrial management for a term expiring January 31, 2007. He succeeds William Blumhardt whose term has expired.
Sean P. O’Neil of Livonia, staff planner for the White Lake Township Planning Department. Mr. O’Neil is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring January 31, 2006. He succeeds Sondra Houlton whose term has expired.
Dale G. Stevens of Williamsburg, director of construction codes and building official for the Grand Traverse County Construction Code Office. Mr. Stevens is appointed to represent municipal building inspectors for a term expiring January 31, 2007. He succeeds J. David Lather whose term has expired.
The State Construction Code Commission prepares and promulgates the state construction code that governs the construction, use, and occupation of buildings and structures. The commission is also charged with adding, amending, and/or rescinding rules to update the code at least once every three years in order to coincide with the national code change cycle.
These appointments are subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963. They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.
