Lansing Chiropractor Summarily Suspended

Contact:  James McCurtis, Jr. (517) 241-2112
Agency: Community Health

February 14, 2008

The Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) has summarily suspended the chiropractic license of Fernando Ponce, D.C. The MDCH, Bureau of Health Professions orders a summary suspension when it believes that the public's health, safety, and welfare warrant emergency action.

The summary suspension was based, in part, on allegations that Ponce had sexually assaulted three female patients, including a 13 year-old girl. Ponce was arraigned and charged in the 54-A Judicial District Court, Ingham County, Michigan, for one count of Criminal Sexual Conduct-2nd Degree and six counts of Criminal Sexual Conduct-3rd Degree. The criminal matter remains pending. Additionally, it is alleged that Ponce was performing chiropractic services in exchange for cash during the time period in which his chiropractic license was suspended.

On Feb. 12, 2008, the MDCH issued an order immediately suspending Ponce's license pursuant to the Public Health Code. An administrative hearing will be scheduled to address the status of Ponce's chiropractic license.
