The Building Division provides building code administration, enforcement and inspections services. They also provide building inspections for manufactured housing communities, issue manufactured housing licenses and provide staff support to the Manufactured Housing Commission. They are also responsible for installer/servicers, retailers and manufacturers, administrative action relative to these functions and ordinance reviews for manufactured housing communities. The division also registers code inspectors and approves instructors and training programs for code inspectors.

The Building Officials, Plan Reviewers, and Inspectors rules were filed with the Secretary of State on March 25, 2013, and become effective on April 24, 2013. The Building Officials, Plan Reviewers, and Inspectors Rules were updated to clarify and update experience requirements to become registered as a code official or plan reviewer in Michigan; provide for a grace period for re-registreation of building officals, plan reviewers, and inspectors; and update the types of educational and training programs that are allowed. The 2009 Michigan Building/Residential, Rehabilitation and Energy Code Rules were filed with the Secretary of State on November 8, 2010, and become effective March 9, 2011. The rules provide the latest standards to protect the health and promote the safety and welfare of the people by regulating the construction, reconstruction and alteration of buildings within the state.
