|  Independent Living Program from the Michigan Commission for the Blind
The Michigan Commission for the Blind's Independent Living Program is for people age 55 or older who are legally blind and want to continue living at home as self-sufficiently as possible. Call 1-800-292-4200 to speak with an MCB Independent Living Program staff member in your area, or, for a brief overview of the program, read or listen to the MCB Independent Living Program brochure online in PDF format (with photos), Microsoft Word (in text only), or audio (MP3). A summer program June 26 through August 15, 2008, for blind and visually impaired high school juniors and seniors as well as anyone else who would like to pursue college training, but has not done so as a person who is blind or visually impaired.

(MCB College Student Guidelines and College Assessment.) Before an Individual Plan for Employment is developed that includes the use of Michigan Commission for the Blind resources for college, the individual must demonstrate his or her ability to function in the academic environment. The Michigan Commission for the Blind College Assessment, which is posted here as a Word file, has been developed to measure a student's preparedness for college, specifically in the areas of communication skills, note taking, technology skills, travel, and activities of daily living.

• AFB Senior Site
AFB Senior Site. To help families, caregivers and people directly affected by vision loss, the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) has launched a new, totally accessible, multimedia web site that offers instructional videos, tips, and testimonials to help this country's growing low-vision population maintain independence. AFB's launch of the AFB Senior Site comes amid concerns from health officials that diseases like age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy are expected to double as the nation's 78 million baby boomers reach retirement age and beyond.

Michigan Assistive Technology Loan Fund allows people with disabilities and seniors (or their family members) to purchase assistive technology devices or services, including modification of vehicles and homes. Loans may also cover cost of training to use the purchased equipment, warranties, and service agreements.

Vision Loss Simulation Slide Show (Arizona Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired). This presentation contains slides which are simulations of various types of vision loss. However, they are only simulations of visual loss. Vision is a dynamic system which cannot be accurately depicted by slides or other static images, and actual vision loss varies greatly from individual to individual, even when caused by the same eye condition.
