Program Overview

A secure 36 bed-treatment program that provides needed services for male youth adjudicated for sex offenses in an environment that is safe and secure for the youth, staff and the community, and which fosters self esteem, responsibility and respect for others. We also have a 4 bed secure detention unit.

Secure Treatment

  • Licensed for males, ages 12 to 20.
  • Accept both court and state wards. 
  • Sex offenders specific programming.
  • Non-severe substance abusers.
  • Youths with mental health needs.
  • Provide re-integration services.

Educational Highlights

  • On campus school.
  • Academic testing and assessment.
  • Ability specific instruction.
  • Remedial and special education services.
  • Vocational assessment/training.
  • Academic credits toward high school diploma.
  • GED test.
  • Social and Life Skills training.
  • Physical conditioning.

Quick Facts About Treatment

  • Residents live in group made up of 9 youths.
  • Treatment based on cognitive/behavioral principles.
  • Strength based/Individual treatment planning.
  • Group and individual counseling.
  • Progress determined by completion of tasks.
  • Treatment tasks include, Life Story, Committing Offense, Cognitive Life History, Affective Life History, Sexual, Delinquent and Violent History, Offense Cycles,Empathy and Reintegration.
  • Positive Behavior Support System.
  • Family involvement.
  • Average length of stay 12 months.
  • All staff trained in use of BJJ crisis continuum.
  • ERASOR (Estimate of Risk of Adolescent Sexual Offense Recidivism) used to assess a youth's potential to re-offend.
  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) available.
  • Experiential Education used to work on practice and mastery of life skills.

Ancillary Services

  • Balanced and restorative justice programming/community projects.
  • On-site medical/dental services.
  • Psychiatric services.
  • Non-denominational religious services.
  • On campus work projects to aid in meeting court ordered restitution.

Shawono Center is located approximately 6 miles west of the city of Grayling on M-72.
