WHEREAS, cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the United States of and the State of Michigan, and remains a significant public health challenge, impacting countless individuals and families across our nation; and,
WHEREAS, accurate and timely cancer data are essential for understanding cancer trends, developing effective prevention and treatment strategies, and improving patient outcomes; and,
WHEREAS, cancer registrars are highly skilled data information specialists who play a vital role in collecting, managing, and analyzing cancer data, ensuring its quality and integrity, and capturing a complete history, diagnosis, treatment, and health status for every cancer patient in Michigan and the U.S.; and,
WHEREAS, that curated data provides essential information to researchers, healthcare providers, and public health officials to better monitor and advance cancer treatments, conduct research, and improve cancer prevention and screening programs; and,
WHEREAS, cancer registrars work for hospital, state, and federal cancer registries, and the information they collect is reported, by law, to state and federal government agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Cancer Institute; and,
WHEREAS, cancer registrars are essential in the fight against cancer, and Michigan appreciates their hard work and service to our family, friends, and loved ones; and,
WHEREAS, the purpose of National Cancer Registrars Week is to emphasize the important role cancer registrars play in capturing the data that informs cancer research, prevention, and treatment programs;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim April 13 – 19, 2025 as National Cancer Registrars Week in Michigan.
