March 2025: Irish American Heritage Month

WHEREAS, Michigan is home to a vibrant and thriving Irish American community, whose members have made significant contributions to the cultural, social, and economic fabric of our state; and,

WHEREAS, March has been recognized as Irish American Heritage Month since 1991, providing an opportunity to celebrate the Irish American community; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan has a rich history of Irish American immigration, with many Irish Americans settling in the state during the 19th and 20th centuries, and continuing to make their mark in agriculture, mining, education, politics, and many other fields; and,

WHEREAS, the Irish American community in Michigan has preserved and shared its unique cultural heritage through including music, dance, language, and food; and,

WHEREAS, we recognize the importance of preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the Irish American community in Michigan, and encourage Michiganders to participate in activities and events that celebrate and highlight the contributions of this important community; and,

WHEREAS, we express our appreciation and gratitude to the Irish American community in Michigan for their contributions to our state, and encourage all Michiganders to join us in celebrating Irish American Heritage Month;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim March 2025 as Irish American Heritage Month in Michigan.
