WHEREAS, the State of Michigan has over $2 billion in unclaimed property, including uncashed checks, insurance proceeds, and other financial assets that are considered lost or abandoned when an owner cannot be located after a specific period of time; and,
WHEREAS, for decades, the State of Michigan has received millions of dollars annually turned over by entities who cannot locate the owners and has made a commitment to reuniting these financial assets to their rightful owners; and,
WHEREAS, currently, the State of Michigan holds over 20 million accounts to be returned to Michigan residents; and,
WHEREAS, each year, the State of Michigan returns over $150 million dollars to rightful owners; and,
WHEREAS, to find out if you have unclaimed property listed under your name, please visit the State’s Unclaimed Property website at www.michigan.gov/unclaimedproperty and file your claim using this free service;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim February 1, 2025, as Unclaimed Property Day in Michigan, and I urge residents to use this free service and share this information with other Michigan residents.
