October 17-23, 2024: Pharmacy Week

WHEREAS, pharmacists are medication experts and among the most readily accessible members of any health care team, helping the public receive professional guidance for the safe and effective use of prescription and over-the-counter medications; and,

WHEREAS, pharmacy professionals play a critical role in maintaining and improving the health of Michigan's residents; they provide professional services and education, helping patients receive the most benefit from their medications and reduce health care costs; and,

WHEREAS, the demand for pharmaceutical services continues to rise due to an increased amount of multiple medications per patient, more medications being available without a prescription, and other factors; and,

WHEREAS, pharmacists provide prescriptive services as part of an interdisciplinary team with physicians by leveraging collaborative practice agreements to enhance greater access to birth control, and opioid overdose treatment/prevention medications; and,

WHEREAS, through education and experience, a pharmacist improves patients' health by encouraging medication adherence, enhancing patient therapy, and detecting as well as preventing dangerous medication interactions; and,

WHEREAS, pharmacists empower patients to be proactive with their health by offering general health screenings for blood pressure and cholesterol levels, diabetes, and other conditions, as well as providing vital immunizations to keep patients healthy and safe; and,

NOWTHEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim, October 17-23, 2024 as Pharmacy Week in Michigan.
