September 25, 2022: Gold Star Mother's and Family's Day

WHEREAS, today and every day, we honor the families of American service members who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our nation; and,

WHEREAS, the term “Gold Star” began during World War I when American families displayed flags in homes, businesses, schools, and churches with a gold star for each loved one lost in military service; and,

WHEREAS, today, the nation recognizes the sacrifice that all Gold Star family members make when a father, mother, brother, sister, son, daughter, or spouse dies in active service to our nation; and,

WHEREAS, our state and our nation are safer and stronger because of the selfless service and sacrifice of our service members; and,

WHEREAS, on Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day, our state works to ensure the families of lost service members have the resources and support they need;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim September 25, 2022, as Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day in Michigan.
