March 14-20, 2022: Fix a Leak Week
March 08, 2022
WHEREAS, Michigan is committed to preserving our freshwater resources by establishing water efficiency standards and offering Michiganders education and resources to identify water leaks in their home; and,
WHEREAS, an average American household's plumbing leaks can account for more than 10,000 gallons of water wasted every year; and,
WHEREAS, water leaks in low-income communities are compounded by system inequities that may contribute to access and affordability issues; and,
WHEREAS, leaks in homes can create conditions that allow for the growth of mold or mildew, which can aggravate the health conditions of homeowners living with allergies, asthma, and other chronic lung diseases; and,
WHEREAS, leaks can reduce water pressure in piping networks, allowing the introduction of contaminants into the system and exposing residents to polluted drinking water; and,
WHEREAS, leaks are the dominant component of Unaccounted for Water (UFW), and they increase the operating cost of water supplier utilities in terms of energy; and,
WHEREAS, fixing easily corrected household water leaks can save residents on their water bills and provide protection to the water system overall; and,
WHEREAS, during this week, we are dedicated to broadening public understanding of the critical impact of water leaks, especially in low-income communities;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim March 14-20, 2022, as Fix a Leak Week in Michigan.
