October 2021: Michigan Medicare/Medicaid Program, Inc. Awareness Month

WHEREAS, October 15 marks the beginning of the annual Medicare Part D open enrollment period; and,

 

WHEREAS, Michigan has more than 1.7 million residents ages 65 and over; and,

 

WHEREAS, Michigan has made protecting older adults from fraud and scams a priority, and open enrollment is a time when we see a rise in scams targeting older adults; and,

 

WHEREAS, Michigan Medicare/Medicaid Program (MMAP), Inc. is a free health benefit counseling service provided to Michigan residents; and,

 

WHEREAS, MMAP, Inc. works through the area agencies on aging to provide high quality and accessible health benefit information and counseling, supported by a statewide network of unpaid and paid skilled professionals; and,

 

WHEREAS, the goal of MMAP, Inc. is to educate, counsel and empower Michigan's older adults and individuals with disabilities, and those who serve them, so that they can make informed health benefit decisions; and,

 

WHEREAS, MMAP, Inc. counselors help individuals find the best coverage for their personal situation, saving millions of dollars each year for people living on a fixed income;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim October 2021 as Michigan Medicare/Medicaid Program, Inc. Awareness Month in Michigan.
