Laurie Bechhofer
Laurie Bechhofer, based in Lansing, is a consultant at the Michigan Department of Education (MDE), specializing in adolescent health, HIV/STI education, and LGBTQ+ student support since 1996. As Director of the MDE LGBTQ+ Students Project, Laurie enhances Michigan schools' capacity to support LGBTQ+ students' health, wellbeing, and educational success. She excels in relationship-building, data-driven policy, and amplifying marginalized voices to create equitable school environments. Laurie co-founded a Michigan-based organization promoting sexual health and rights. Recognized as a Fellow of the American School Health Association, Laurie holds a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Cornell University and a Master’s in Public Health from the University of Michigan. She represents MDE until November 2027.
