E. Gordon Stump, 1991-2003 The Adjutant General of Michigan

Lieutenant General Stump was born in Zanesville, Ohio. He graduated from South High School in Akron, Ohio in 1959. He attended and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Akron in 1965.

Gen. Stump's military career began in 1965. He received his Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) commission as a distinguished graduate from the University of Akron. He attended pilot training at Webb Air Force Base, Texas. He received his wings and the Commander's Trophy for placing first in his class in September 1966. After receiving his assignment as a pilot in the F-102, he attended Fighter Interceptor Training at Perrin Air Force Base, Texas.

From Perrin AFB, Stump was assigned to the 509th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, Clark Air Force Base, Philippines. From July 1967 through July 1969, he flew 241 combat missions out of South Vietnam and Thailand. Forty-one of these missions were over North Vietnam. He also spent thirty days in Suwon, South Korea during the Pueblo Crisis. In July 1969, General Stump left Clark Air Force Base and was assigned alert duty in the F-102 at Key West Naval Air Station.

On 31 December 1969, Gen. Stump was released from active duty. He joined the Ohio Air National Guard (ANG) in March 1970, flying F-84F's. In March 1973, he left the Ohio ANG and moved to Michigan, joining the 107th Tactical Fighter Squadron, flying the F-100. He served as the Flight Commander until June 1979. In 1979 the unit replaced their F-100's with A-7's and he became the Squadron Commander. He completed A-7 School in July 1979 and assumed the duties of Squadron Commander until August1981. From August 1981 to December 1986 he was Chief of the Command Post for the 127th Tactical Fighter Wing.

In December 1986 he became Director of Operations for the Michigan Air National Guard Headquarters Staff located at the National Guard Armory in Lansing, Michigan. In July 1987 he assumed the Deputy Commander's position. In September 1989 he became the Commander, Headquarters, Michigan Air National Guard. General Stump maintained his aeronautical rating and became qualified in flying the F-16's at Selfridge ANGB, Michigan. On 3 February 1991 General Stump was appointed by Governor Engler to the position of The Adjutant General of Michigan.

General Stump's military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal/Silver Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Combat Readiness Medal/Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Force Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Force Overseas Ribbon-Long, Air Force Longevity Service Ribbon/5 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, Armed Forces Reserve Medal/Hourglass Device, Small Arms Marksmanship Ribbon, Air Force Training Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, State Legion of Merit, State Broadsword Service Ribbon/Gold Oak Leaf Cluster, and the State OCONUS Ribbon/Silver Oak Leaf Cluster.

General Stump is retired from Michelin Tire Corporation (formerly Uniroyal Goodrich Tire Company) as Vice President of Automotive Engineering.

General Stump is a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Michigan Aviation Hall of Fame, Chairman of the Board of the Michigan Freedom Foundation, National Guard Association of the United States and the National Guard Association of Michigan.
