FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 21, 2025

LANSING, MICH) The Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) is reminding consumers who currently have a Medicare Advantage health plan that they can make changes to their plan through March 31, when the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment period ends.

“If you are currently enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you have until March 31 to switch to another plan that might better meet your healthcare needs,” said DIFS Director Anita Fox. “Before changing plans, be sure to check that your healthcare provider is included in the new plan’s provider network, that your prescription drugs are covered, and that you have thoroughly reviewed the details of the new plan before making the switch.”

You can make a change to a new Medicare Advantage plan if you were enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan in 2024 by calling 1-800-MEDICARE, using the Medicare plan finder tool online, or by calling an insurance company and enrolling directly. During the open enrollment period you may also cancel your current Medicare Advantage Plan and return to Original Medicare. In this scenario, you may also be able to purchase a separate Medicare drug plan. The open enrollment period does not apply if you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan through your former employer, you changed your Medicare Advantage plan in December because your plan was discontinued, or you have a Medicare Advantage plan through Medicaid. If you have questions, you can contact the Michigan Medicare Assistance Program (MMAP) and speak to a counselor by calling 1-800-803-7174 or by visiting mmapinc.org.

MMAP is a part of the national network of State Health Assistance Programs. Certified counselors help Medicare beneficiaries of all ages understand their Medicare options and how to protect themselves from health care fraud and scams. Services are free and confidential and funded by grants from the state and federal governments. MMAP receives no funds from and has no affiliation with the insurance industry.
