MPSC Highlights Utility Programs and Protections for Senior Citizens

May 21, 2012- The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) today issued its new consumer tips sheet on utility programs and protections available to senior citizen customers.
"A number of programs exist to help senior citizens with utility bill issues," said MPSC Chairman John D. Quackenbush. "The Michigan Public Service Commission's new consumer tips sheet offers seniors a number of practical ways to avoid shut-offs and get help with utility bills."
Covered in the consumer tips sheet are: shut-off protection available during the heating season; third-party notification programs; medical emergencies; budget payment plans; and partial payment options. The consumer tips sheet also highlights other programs: state emergency relief program; weatherization; home heating credit; earned income tax credit; state earned income tax credit; Lifeline telephone discount; Elder Law of Michigan; Office of Services to the Aging; Michigan Veterans' Trust Fund; and 2-1-1.
The MPSC is an agency within the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.
