March 12, 2024: Alloimmunization and HDFN Awareness Day

WHEREAS, alloimmunization and hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN) is a rare and sometimes fatal condition in which maternal antibodies attack an unborn baby’s red blood cells, resulting in anemia that can continue after birth, severe swelling of tissues and organs, and neonatal jaundice; and,

WHEREAS,
delayed diagnosis, lack of medical expertise, and limited access to timely treatments can lead to poor outcomes in those affected by alloimmunization and HDFN; and,

WHEREAS, ongoing research continues to yield crucial advancements in disease prevention and management; and,

WHEREAS, families affected by alloimmunization and HDFN can shoulder a significant burden in advocating for their babies and raising awareness of this rare diagnosis; and,

WHEREAS, the tragedy and emotional toll of pregnancy and infant loss related to alloimmunization and HDFN may be preventable in many cases; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan wishes to acknowledge the pregnancies and babies that were lost far too soon; and,

WHEREAS, increased awareness of the causes and impacts of this rare disease may lead to greater understanding, support, and resources in communities across Michigan; and,

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim March 12, 2024, as Alloimmunization and HDFN Awareness Day in Michigan.
