September 8, 2022: Lissencephaly Awareness Day
September 08, 2022
WHEREAS, lissencephaly is a rare congenital condition that causes a developing baby’s brain to appear smooth, without the normal folds and grooves; and,
WHEREAS, it is estimated that approximately 1 in 100,000 infants are born with lissencephaly, often due to genetic factors; and,
WHEREAS, children with this condition frequently experience seizures, swallowing difficulties, muscle spasms, psychomotor impairment, and significant developmental delays, as well as a shortened lifespan; and,
WHEREAS, there is no cure for lissencephaly. Early and consistent interventions can improve quality of life and help prevent medical complications, allowing families to successfully care for their children at home, but increased awareness, education, and support are desperately needed; and,
WHEREAS, Lissencephaly Foundation Inc. is a nonprofit charitable organization that helps support affected individuals through its continued efforts to empower families and educate communities;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do herby proclaim September 8, 2022, as Lissencephaly Awareness Day in Michigan and urge our citizens, patients, caregivers, medical professionals, and support organizations to unite on that day in observance of such an important cause.
