May 23, 2022: GM1 Gangliosidosis Awareness Day

WHEREAS, GM1 gangliosidosis is an inherited neurodegenerative disease that results in the progressive loss of physical and developmental abilities, with early-onset forms usually fatal in childhood; and,
WHEREAS, GM1 gangliosidosis is one of approximately 50 lysosomal storage disorders, occurring in 1 in every 100,000 - 200,000 live births; and,
WHEREAS, lack of public awareness and visibility of GM1 gangliosidosis contributes to delayed diagnoses and difficulties in accessing appropriate medical care, specialized services, and support; and,
WHEREAS, there is currently no cure or approved therapy for GM1 gangliosidosis, however early diagnosis is important to ensure timely symptom management, genetic counseling, and supportive interventions; and,
WHEREAS, increased awareness, advocacy, and research efforts are critical to help improve the lives of those affected with GM1 gangliosidosis and ultimately lead to a cure for this devastating disease;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 23, 2022, as GM1 Gangliosidosis Awareness Day in Michigan.
