Unemployment Compensation (UC) General Information

UNEMPLOYED WORKERS AND EMPLOYERS WITH QUESTIONS - If you are an unemployed worker or employer customer with questions, please call one of our toll-free hotlines during the hours below:

  • Employer Customer Relations hotline, 1-800-638-3994
    8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays

  • Claims line, 1-866-500-0017
    8 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays

INTERNET FILED CLAIMS - You may apply for unemployment benefits via our Internet-based service. Click here for more information or to get started.

TELEPHONE FILED CLAIMS - You can file for unemployment benefits by telephone from anywhere in Michigan and North America.  The state's unemployment insurance program has established a special toll-free telephone number for you to use in filing a new claim or reopening an established claim.  We encourage you to file by telephone.  Filing by mail could actually delay your claim.  Click here for more information.

HOW TO MAKE AN INQUIRY ABOUT YOUR CLAIM - If you have filed for unemployment benefits by Internet or telephone and have a question or problem with your claim, call our telephone filed claims number using a touch-tone telephone. The inquiry option is available weekdays between 8:00 a.m. and 6 p.m. (temporary extended hours). Click here for more information.  

CALL MARVIN TOLL-FREE - Contact MARVIN by phone or online -- You must report (certify) through MARVIN once every two weeks to claim your unemployment benefits. MARVIN is available, either by telephone or online, Monday through Wednesday, from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) at your scheduled day and time. If you were unable to contact MARVIN at your scheduled day and time, it is also available on Thursday and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Click here for more information. Contact MARVIN ...

UIA 1017e, INTERACTIVE WAGE DETAIL REPORT - Employers may now file their quarterly Wage Detail Reports, form UIA 1017, using our electronic version (1017e), and Employer File Submission (EFS) service.  You may visit our website for further information at:  https://webacct.unemployment.state.mi.us.  If you experience problems or have questions please call:  (313) 456-2347 or (313) 456-2764.  Click here for more information.

FRAUD HOTLINE - There is a 24-hour Toll Free Fraud Hotline telephone number available to anonymously report unemployment fraud.  Call 1-800-822-1122.

THE WELFARE-TO-WORK AND WORK OPPORTUNITY TAX CREDIT (WOTC) - These federal income tax credits reduce an employer's cost of doing business and require little paperwork.  Their success and growth for private sector employers depend on a strong public and private sector partnership.  Helping those most in need find and retain jobs and gain on-the-job experience benefits all employers and increases America's economic growth and productivity.  Click here for more information.

TAX OFFICE - Eemployers who now call the Tax Office with questions, requests, or for other assistance will be serviced by the next available staff person in the area that handles the function. The numbers for the Tax Status, Tax Maintenance and Collections Teams follow.

TAX STATUS -- (313) 456-2080

The Tax Status team can answer questions about registering a new business, the sale or discontinuance of a business, the taxability of services/wages, seasonal designation, the protest/appeal of a tax status issue or a recent audit.

TAX MAINTENANCE -- (313) 456-2010

The Tax Maintenance team can answer questions about tax rates, overpayments, 940 certifications, the protest/appeal of a tax rate, audit adjustments, or the verification of payments on your account.

COLLECTIONS -- (313) 456-2090

The Collections team can answer questions about a Notice of Assessment, the pay-off amount of a judgment, a tax lien or discharge, a statement or clearance of account, or to arrange a payment plan.
