The Michigan Department of Treasury and the AARP have teamed up again this year to provide tax help to thousands of senior citizens throughout Michigan.
Treasury provided tax preparation training to more than 1,000 volunteers during the month of January to enable them to staff the AARP tax assistance sites which prepare tax returns for senior citizens. Seniors should pay particular attention to the filing deadlines for the Prescription Drug Credit (MI-1040CR-9), which must be received by the Michigan Department of Treasury by June 1, 2001; and the Home Heating Credit (MI-1040CR-7) which must be received by September 30, 2001. These deadlines ensure that the appropriated funds will cover all of the claims.
AARP has sites in nearly every county in Michigan; some sites make appointments and others provide walk-in service for citizens. To determine the site closest to your home, call AARP, toll-free at 1-888-227-7669.
