The Michigan Department of Treasury has expanded its options to
process tax return information and issue tax refunds faster. E-file, TeleFile,
Two-dimensional (2-D) Barcoding and Direct Deposit are cutting the time it takes
to data process the information. These automated methods already account for
over 1 million returns, or 64 percent of the total processed to date with
the bulk of tax returns yet to be filed. Additionally, 24 percent of taxpayers
with refunds have taken advantage of Direct Deposit.
"We are introducing new ways of filing tax returns that make
filing easier and refunding faster," said State Treasurer Mark A. Murray.
"Taxpayers now have a variety of options available. These options go a long way
toward familiarizing the public with the ease and viability of conducting
business electronically."
The 2-D Barcoding process involves a software program for tax
preparers. The software captures the data on the return and compacts it into a
barcode on the front of the return, which can be read by special scanners at the
Department of Treasury when the return is received. This process short-circuits
the data entry process, resulting in a faster refund for the filer. Ask your tax
preparer about 2-D Barcoding.
In addition to the e-file option, some taxpayers may be able to
file by telephone. Taxpayers typically using the EZ form received a TeleFile
package this year, which makes filing as easy as a 10-minute telephone call. The
refunds are issued within 4 to 10 days. If you received the TeleFile package,
you are encouraged to take advantage of this time-saving method. Help is
