With the April 16 filing deadline looming, the
Department of Treasury is stepping up its efforts to provide last minute
assistance to Michigan citizens. Treasury staff will be available from 7 a.m.
until 11 p.m. daily beginning Monday, April 2, through Monday, April 16, to
answer questions and provide guidance to taxpayers completing their income tax
returns. Representatives can be reached toll free at 1-800-487-7000. Taxpayers
may access pre-recorded tax information on various subjects and receive a refund
status report by calling 1-800-827-4000. In addition, taxpayers may find answers
to tax questions on the Treasury web site.
"Our web site is a great source of information and services,"
said State Treasurer Mark A. Murray. "Internet activity has skyrocketed in the
last five years, and Treasury has made every effort to keep pace with the demand
for greater self-service via the internet." Treasury’s Web site receives 2.5
million "hits" annually, indicating the public’s interest in accessing
assistance at their convenience using their personal computers.
The Web site is accessed at http://www.michigan.gov/treasury and
provides frequently asked questions and answers, general tax filing and
processing information, and downloadable forms for all taxes.
Average processing time increases after April 1, because around
50% of the returns filed annually come in during the first two weeks of April.
Taxpayers can reduce processing time by using one of the electronic filing
options available. Those opting for a last minute paper filing can drop
completed returns into the Return Drop Box located in front of the Treasury
Building at 430 W. Allegan Street in Lansing.
