State Treasurer Reminds Taxpayers of Available Extensions

Contact:  Terry Stanton (517) 335-1356

April 14, 2002

For individuals unable to complete their tax returns by the April 15th deadline, taxpayers can request an extension by filing an Application for Extension to File Michigan Tax Returns (Form #4). "An approved extension gives taxpayer's until August 15, 2002, to file their individual tax return," said State Treasurer Douglas B. Roberts. "This allows a taxpayer to continue to gather the necessary paperwork to complete an accurate return."

Roberts emphasized that this is an extension of the filing deadline only, not the payment deadline. Extension requests must be received by April 15, 2002, with a payment of the anticipated taxes due. "Taxpayers often believe that by filing an extension, they receive additional time to pay taxes, but this is not the case," Roberts said. "The April 15 deadline is in effect for all taxpayers, even those filing for an extension.

A Form #4 may be requested by calling 1-800-367-3263 or by downloading from the Department of Treasury Web site at www.michigan.gov/treasury. Extension forms may also be requested via fax modem at 517-241-8730.
