Treasury Identifies Common Errors

Contact:  Terry Stanton (517) 335-1356

April 12, 2002

To speed refunds and ensure error free filing, taxpayers are reminded to thoroughly check returns before mailing them to the Michigan Department of Treasury. Errors on a tax return will require additional processing, slowing the refund. To avoid delays, taxpayers are reminded to:

  • Use the preprinted mailing label, if all information on the label is accurate. If writing in names and social security numbers, write clearly and accurately.
  • Make certain the school district code on the return is correct.
  • Double-check all mathematical calculations.
  • Use only one envelope per filer.
  • Always file the MI 1040 on top, followed by any required schedules, then the MI 1040CR (Homestead Property Tax Credit), then the MI 1040CR-7 (Home Heating Credit).
  • Use the Direct Deposit option. You do not need to file electronically to have your refund deposited directly into your bank account. Direct Deposit is safe, easy, and gives you immediate access to your refund. Almost one half million taxpayers have opted for direct deposit so far this year.

Paper returns take 6 to 8 weeks to process. To check the status of your refund, call the Department of Treasury’s Computerized Refund Information System (CRIS), at 1-800-827-4000.
