SBT Fed/State e-file Program

Repeal of Single Business Tax - SBT is repealed for tax years beginning after December 31, 2007.

IMPORTANT
Communication to Business Taxpayers and Tax Preparers
This will be the last year that Michigan will accept SBT Fed/State e-file returns via MeF. Michigan will continue to accept prior year SBT e-file returns through its Direct portal, as supported by your software. Michigan has identified a cut-off date for submitting SBT Fed/State returns which will allow sufficient time for resubmissions of rejected returns and retrieval of acknowledgments:

The last day to transmit a first time SBT Fed/State return for current and prior years will be December 15, 2008.

The last day to transmit a previously rejected SBT Fed/State return for current and prior years will be December 18, 2008.

SBT Fed/State returns that need to be filed after the above dates will need to be paper filed. This can be accomplished in two ways: 1) Mail to the address listed in the Single Business Tax Instruction Booklet, or 2) Fax to the Alternative Filing Office's attention at (517) 636-4378.

Thank you for your support of Michigan's SBT e-file program.

Michigan participates in the IRS Fed/State 1120/1065 e-file program (Fed/State e-file). Tax preparers and transmitters accepted into the Fed/State e-file program may e-file both the federal and Single Business Tax (SBT) returns together in one transmission to the IRS Service Center. You may also be able to e-file your SBT return separately from your federal return, if that filing option is supported by the software program you are using. How to Participate in the SBT Fed/State e-file Program

  • Complete the IRS application process to participate in the IRS Fed/State e-file Program. Please allow about 45 days to process the application. Read more about e-file and the IRS application process at www.irs.gov.
  • Once your Federal application is completed and approved, the IRS will forward your information to the State of Michigan and you are automatically accepted into the Michigan SBT Fed/State e-file program.
  • Taxpayers can browse Michigan's Web site list of tax preparers to find a preparer who offers e-file. If you do not want to be listed on Michigan's Web site, or you want to change your contact information, you may e-mail the Alternative Filing Office at MIefile2D@michigan.gov. You must include your Electronic Filer Identification Number (EFIN) and telephone number with your request.
