SYSTEM ENGINEERING METHODOLOGY TRAINING  

This area contains a number of training materials. Below is an explanation of the various parts of the training programs and how to use them.

In most cases training for the various area will be organized and implemented by the area SUITE Team Representatives based on how their area is implementing SUITE. The basic training materials developed by the SUITE Training Team are explained below.  In most cases they are customized for local delivery.

Summary of current in-house training opportunities

1.  Awareness Training Basic - all audiences

This program is a very simple set of PowerPoint slides.  It is designed for the most basic uses.  It is based on the "Everyone Needs to Know the Answers to Four Basic Questions" scenario.

It has a number of slides each one customized for a very specific audience.  Each slide's speaker notes contain details on how to deliver the information most effectively.

The slide presentation contains individual slides for Information Officers, Middle Managers, MDIT Application Developers, MDIT Staffers,  and Infrastructure Staffers.

2.  Clients who interact with MDIT

Significant discussion over "training" clients was discussed during the development of training materials for SEM. The recommended approach is a mix of several methods. First and foremost, "client training" occurs at the highest levels.  Each of the Agency Information Officers discussed the SEM with the client and described the impact on the client.  The training team also recommended that the clients be "trained" in regularly scheduled staff meetings by having MDIT staff fold SUITE into discussions about applications.  More detailed training for client, if needed, would come from actually including clients in the training for MDIT staff.  A number of the training team representatives are planning to make this type of client involvement required.

3.  Awareness Training - MDIT Agency Services

This is a slide presentation with speaker notes that contains more in-depth information about the process and why MDIT is moving in this direction. This is the program most MDIT Agency Services people should use.

4.  Awareness Training for MDIT Infrastructure Services, Security, Contracts Procurement and Employee and Financials Services ect.

This is the Awareness Presentation program initially customized for MDIT Infrastructure Services.  It includes a higher level overview of the process but leaves out some of the details. Its focus is on the touchpoints (interaction of application development areas with other critical areas within MDIT) of the new process and what that means to MDIT Infrastructure and other areas of MDIT. This shortened and more focused approach is appropriate for groups needing an understanding of the process but are more interested in how the new approach will impact them.

5.  Process Training - MDIT Agency Services

This program provides an overall explanation of  SUITE and the SEM and it's relationship to MDIT becoming a CMMI Level 3 organization.  The various stages of the process are discussed and explained.  The use of templates and plans and how to use them is covered.  The need for touchpoints with various other areas of MDIT and how they will help further improve the quality of our applications is also discussed.  For areas whose Applications are not yet involved this is the most appropriate level of detail.

Some areas have elected to combine the Awareness and Process Training into a single session because it more accurately reflects the needs of their area.

6.  Process Training Infrastructure/Other

This is the Process Training Awareness Presentation program initially customized for Infrastructure.  It includes a higher level overview of the process but leaves out some of the details. Its focus is on the touchpoints of the new process and what that means to Infrastructure and other areas. This shortened and more focused approach is appropriate for groups needing an understanding of the process but are more interested in how the new approach will affect them.

7.  SEM Detail Training - Agency Services Teams chosen to implement SUITE

This program uses slides and materials from the Process Training but includes more in depth review and discussion on Stages, Templates and Plans.    A key focus of the training is an emphasis on the Stage Exit Guide and the Structured Walkthrough Guide. The use of these guides is important since they are new and more formalized ways of doing things, some of which we are not currently doing. The program is designed to be delivered as employees and new teams begin implementing SEM in their area.

The modular structure of the program helps individual managers customize the training material to fit their development process while maintaining the overall consistency required.  The program covers the templates and plans in more detail with resources and exercises designed to help managers make the SEM more real in their work area. It is strongly encouraged to coordinate this training with the selection of an application that will begin using the SEM.  Delivery of the modules should be meshed with the development stage the team and application are at. The keys to effective detail training are, 1.) Full management support, 2,) providing the training at the right time - just when it is needed and 3.) making the discussions in the training sessions relevant to the trainee's application.
