2006 License Renewal Requirements - PA 495 (09/20/2005)

As the 2006 license renewal period approaches, the Department of State wishes to provide you with important renewal information.

Renewal Application

Dealer licenses expire on December 31 and must be renewed annually.  The Vehicle Dealer License Renewal Application, form AR-0033, is mailed to the dealer's licensed location in September.  To ensure adequate processing time, please return your renewal application by November 1.  Renewal applications will not be accepted after December 31.  Application for an original license will be required if the renewal application is not received in the Department by December 31.  If form AR-0033 has not been received at the dealer's licensed location by mid-October, it is the dealer's responsibility to request a replacement by contacting the Licensing Unit by e-mail at licensing@michigan.gov or by telephone at 1-888-SOS-MICH (1-888-767-6424).

Public Act 495 Requirements

Public Act 495 of 2004 requires that all vehicle dealer license classifications meet applicable municipal and zoning requirements.   Municipal and zoning approval forms will be included with each renewal application, and must be completed by the appropriate municipal or zoning authority.  The Department recommends starting early to obtain municipal and zoning approvals to avoid delays in application processing.  As an alternative to the Department's municipal and zoning approval forms, the Department will accept a letter of approval on the authority's letterhead, or the authority's approval form (if applicable).  Approval documents submitted to the Department must correctly identify the business name, include a complete business address, list all applicable license classifications, and contain the authority's title, printed name, and signature with date.  Self-certification by the applicant or licensee will not be permitted.

Finally, all applicants for a new or used vehicle dealer's license must certify that the business location meets the expanded established place of business requirements.   For specific information on established place of business and other dealer requirements, you may contact the Bureau of Regulatory Services at 1-888-SOS-MICH (1-888-767-6424), or check the Secretary of State Web site by clicking on "Automotive-related Businesses" at www.Michigan.gov/sos.
