Replacing a Lost or Stolen Driver's License - In State

At a Secretary of State Office
If your standard or enhanced driver's license is lost or stolen, you may visit any Secretary of State office to apply for a replacement.  You will need to present identification to substantiate your identity. A lost or stolen enhanced license is immediately canceled and cannot be used for border-crossing purposes.

Online
You may replace your lost or stolen standard license online through ExpressSOS if you are a U.S. citizen with a valid Social Security number and your license has not expired or been canceled.  Replacing your license online is convenient and saves time. This service is not yet available for enhanced driver's licenses.

Replacing a Lost or Stolen Driver's License - Out of State

By Mail or Fax
If you are traveling in the U.S. and lose your standard or enhanced license, complete a Duplicate Driver License Application and mail or fax it to the Department of State Out-of-State Resident Services Unit to request a replacement and obtain a temporary permit.

Complete each section of the application as directed.  If paying by credit card, include the credit card information in the payment method section of the application and fax a printed copy of the application to (517) 322-5438.  If paying by check or money order, print the completed application and mail it with a check or money order (made payable to the State of Michigan) to the address provided below.

If you are replacing a standard license and do not have a Social Security number, you must provide a letter of ineligibility from the Social Security Administration and proof of legal presence.

Online
You also have the option of replacing a lost, damaged or stolen standard license online through ExpressSOS. You must be a U.S. citizen with a valid Social Security number to replace a license online.
