How do I apply for the background record check?

Answer:

You cannot apply for a hazardous materials endorsement and request a federal background record check if:

  1. Your driving privilege is currently suspended, revoked or denied.
  2. You do not meet the federal standards established by the USA PATRIOT Act or you have a federal disqualification. The disqualifications are listed beginning in 49 C.F.R. 1572.103 and on this TSA Web page.

Integrated Biometric Technology (IBT) is responsible for coordinating the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) approved fingerprint office locations in Michigan. TSA provides a Web site at www.hazprints.com and a toll-free number (877) 429-7746 to help you preregister for your background check or answer any questions.

You should complete a federal background record check application 45-60 days before you need your hazardous materials endorsement. However, you will first be required to complete ALL of the following before the TSA approved fingerprint collection office can collect your fingerprints:

  1. Preregister via the TSA website at www.hazprints.com or via the toll-free TSA HazMat Call Center number at: (877) 429-7746.
  2. Pay the required fingerprint fee. You may pay on-line with a credit card when you pre-register. If you do not pay this fee when you preregister, you must pay using a money order for $89.25, made out to: Integrated Biometric Technology, LLC. Their offices cannot accept cash, checks, or credit cards.
  3. Appear in person at a TSA approved Michigan fingerprint office to have your fingerprints collected.  Provide your driver's license to show that you are a qualified driver, as well as a second ID*.
  4. Provide the 10-digit confirmation number received upon completing the federal background records check preregistration.
  5. Any information required by TSA for the background check.
