Save Time, Renew Online!

Contact:  Kelly Chesney (517) 373-2520
Agency: Secretary of State

April 16, 2003

> To List of Online Services

Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land today announced that branch offices signs will include the department’s Web address. The move underscores her commitment to enhance efficiency and customer convenience through the greater use of online services.

Secretary Land is declining to have her own name on the new signs. She instead is opting to increase public awareness of the numerous Web-based offerings that will simplify consumers’ transactions with Secretary of State offices.

To promote fiscal responsibility and make better use of existing resources, branch office signs that now read, "Secretary of State, Candice S. Miller" will be modified to read "Secretary of State, www.Michigan.gov/sos." Only those signs in disrepair will be replaced entirely.

"I am encouraging the public to save time by renewing online," Secretary Land said. "With Internet access so readily available, Michigan families can conduct a wide range of business with the Secretary of State’s Office from the comfort of their homes. This helps people to make better use of their precious time and improves the agency’s efficiency. Promoting the Web site on our branch office signs is a cost-effective way to educate people about the convenience that lies at their fingertips."

Secretary Land’s emphasis on using technology to provide better service builds on the Department of State’s legacy as an Internet pioneer. The department was the first state government agency to provide online services. It remains at the forefront of customer-service delivery by constantly improving and promoting its Web-based offerings.

The department’s most recent online achievement is the implementation of an application called "Plate It Your Way." This popular and easy-to-use program lets people know whether the personalized license plate they want has already been taken. Users can actually experiment with plate designs and see them in advance.

"Today’s consumer is more computer oriented and welcomes the option of doing business online," Secretary Land said. "State government must keep pace with technological advances so that it can provide prompt, efficient and cost-effective service. This is especially critical at a time when the demand for services outpaces available revenue. Only by staying on the cutting edge can we continue driving Michigan forward."
