Secretary Miller opens new Warren branch

    March 23, 2001

With Warren Mayor Mark Steenbergh and area state legislators present, Secretary of State Candice S. Miller today officially opened the new consolidated Warren Secretary of State branch office at the Universal Mall, 28220 Dequindre, during a special open-house ceremony.

The new Warren Dequindre branch office is one of only four consolidated branch offices in the state and resulted from combining the branch offices at 27186 Dequindre and 5819 E. 13 Mile Rd.

"I am very pleased to officially open the new Warren Dequindre branch office," Secretary Miller said. "Residents will find the branch office's larger space and additional work stations will allow staff to more effectively and efficiently serve them."

Secretary Miller added that as the third largest city in Michigan, Warren deserves a state-of-the-art branch office.

"This innovative new office will allow the Secretary of State's Office to honor our commitment to provide the best possible customer service to the residents of Warren, " Secretary Miller said.

The consolidation means customers and staff will have nearly 5,000 square feet of floor space, or 800 square feet more than in the two previous offices combined; 14 work stations; and 2 dealer-only workstations. While the average branch office with dealer space has 30 dealer boxes for the dropping off and picking up paperwork, the new Warren branch has 50. All 50 of the available dealer boxes were assigned within the first week of business, and there is a waiting list for boxes as they become available.

The enhanced dealer services available at the new branch office are particularly important to the area, which is home to nearly 200 auto dealers. Dealers access the branch office through a separate entrance and use the dealer boxes for quick self-service. Clerks specifically designated to handle dealer work allow other staff to concentrate on the needs of the general public.

The new branch office also houses offices for a Secretary of State Bureau of Automotive Regulation field investigator and the District 42 manager. The new branch is one of only seven branch offices in the area providing 5-year trailer plate registrations and one of eight providing mechanic testing.

Hours for the new branch office will be Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The branch office will be open during the lunch hour.

The branch office is scheduled to become an automotive theme office, with the assistance of Michigan Technological University. Plans are underway to display models, photographs and wall art to highlight the realistic and fanciful trends of vehicle design. Theme offices strengthen the tie between a branch office and the community by showcasing industries, schools and universities, or cultural and historic influences important to the area.

The Warren branch office at 13780 E. 12 Mile Rd. is unaffected by the consolidation and will continue to provide Secretary of State services to the public.
