West Michigan motorcyclists have a new opportunity to practice safe riding skills and prepare to get the state's license endorsement, Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land announced today.

Grand Rapids Community College has begun sponsoring the safety training course that costs just $25. Participants will be provided with a motorcycle to use and instructional materials. Attendees must be at least 15 years old, and come with protective gear including a U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) approved helmet, over-the-ankle boots, full-fingered gloves and eye protection. Participants also must have the ability to ride a bicycle.

"Motorcycling is a wonderful way to explore the natural wonder of Michigan while spending time with friends and family," Land said. "I encourage all new riders to take advantage of this great opportunity offered by Grand Rapids Community College. It's an excellent way to learn the necessary skills to stay safe. And, of course, remember to get your license endorsement - it's the law."

Successful completion of the training course allows participants to waive the skills test required to obtain a motorcycle endorsement on their driver's license. However, a written test still must be taken at a Secretary of State office. The course runs about 15 hours and includes classroom and riding skills practice time. Additionally, it is required of all riders younger than 18 or those who have taken the motorcycle skills test twice and failed.

Land recently observed May as Motorcycle Safety month, noting how more women and families have begun motorcycling as a pastime and encouraging more people to take motorcycle safety courses. Almost half of the more than 3,200 motorcycle crashes in 2006 involved no other vehicles except the motorcycle, suggesting that greater caution or training could have helped to prevent some of the incidents.

To find out more or sign up, visit the college's Web site devoted to the motorcycle course, www.motorcycletraining.us, or call (616) 234-GRCC (4722).
