The Michigan Pharmacists Association (MPA) has honored Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land with its Executive Board Medal in recognition of her successful partnership with the organization in cautioning the public against drowsy driving.
"I am grateful for this award and pleased to have joined with the Michigan Pharmacists Association in promoting safe driving," Land said. "Pharmacists play an important role in Michigan's communities ensuring the safe use of medications. By helping to highlight the message that driving while drowsy is dangerous, the MPA has performed a tremendous public service."
Land and the MPA announced the "Use Caution, Drive Safely" public awareness campaign in February 2006. The statewide effort used public service announcements, billboards, posters and brochures to draw attention to the dangers of driving after taking certain over-the-counter and prescription medications.
Land was presented the award at the MPA's annual banquet in Dearborn on Saturday. The Executive Board Medal was established to recognize the individual who has been "extremely helpful and supportive" to MPA. It is given each year to a person who "has been directly involved in efforts or programs that promote the role of the pharmacist as a key member of the healthcare delivery team responsible for safe and effective patient care." The medal is the highest award the organization bestows on nonpharmacists.
"It is our pleasure to present Secretary Land with the Executive Board Medal for graciously donating her time and efforts to making the roads safer, as well as giving consumers a greater awareness of the value of the services a pharmacist can provide," said Larry Wagenknecht, CEO of the MPA.
